Thirty-Five Years, $700+ Million Recovered. The One Thing That Has Never Changed.

When UtiliSave began in 1991, utility deregulation was just beginning in the United States, commercial real estate was emerging from a severe recession, and the idea that a third-party firm could systematically recover utility billing overpayments was novel enough that most CFOs were skeptical. When we then brought them a refund of $250,000 they nearly fell out of their seat.

Over the past 35+ years, we have watched the utility landscape transform. Deregulation swept through 18 states and DC. Smart meters replaced analog equipment. Data centers became the largest new commercial load in history. ESG reporting turned utility data into a compliance obligation.

“Over 35+ years, the utility landscape transformed completely. The one constant: the bills still contain errors at roughly the same rate. $700M+ recovered is the proof.”— Michael Steifman, Founder & CEO, UtiliSave

And through all of it, one thing has not changed: the bills contain errors. The tariff structures have grown more complex. The billing systems have become more automated. But the error rate has remained stubbornly consistent at roughly 20% of commercial invoices.

Over seven hundred million dollars recovered. Across hospitals, universities, retailers, manufacturers, hotels, school districts, religious institutions and multifamily portfolios. The technology has changed. The result has not. There is money in your utility bills. We go out and find it.
