The Statute of Limitations on Your Utility Refunds Is Counting Down.

The refund recovery window for utility billing errors is defined by state law. In most states, utilities are required to honor claims going back three years. In New York and several other states, the window extends to six years.

Outside that window, refunds are typically not available regardless of the size of the error. The utility may acknowledge the error. It may even correct the billing going forward. But the historical overpayments that fall outside the lookback period are, in most cases, unrecoverable.

This creates a very specific financial calculus: every month that passes without an audit is a month of recoverable history that falls outside the window. If you are in a six-year state and have a billing error that began eight years ago, you can currently recover six years of it. In twelve months, you can only recover five.
